Things to do, places to see in Herceg Novi
Modernity and antiquity merged in one large town – this is the essence of Herceg Novi, a town placed at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. During its turbulent past it was conquered and governed by Turks, Spaniards, Venetians, Russians, French, Austrians.
The Bay of Kotor is worth seeing in itself, as it is the largest bay of the Adriatic sea, as well as one of the most beautiful bays in the world and a UNESCO world heritage site. For centuries it has attracted and fascinated poets, travelers, as well as conquerors. It looks like a natural incision between two great mountains, Lovćen and Orjen, in the country of Montenegro, whose very name means – The Black Mountain.
While in Herceg Novi, take a boat trip to visit the Mamula fortress, which served as a prison for political offenders during the World Wars. It’s a proper ghost town, and you can take fabulous panoramic photos of the sea.
You’ll also hear everyone talking about the Blue Grotto, which is actually a cave famous for the impressive blue and purple light under the water. This is an amazing natural phenomenon that is a must for tourists from any side of the globe. It tends to be overcrowded in the heat of the season, so you should try to catch up with the visiting schedules. Or better yet, ask our driver for an advice. However, do make sure to visit it on a fine day, in order for the light to shine really bright.
You can have an astonishing view of the entire city from the citadel. At the entrance to the old city there is a clock tower, more than 3 centuries old, on a square where you can have a drink in a local cafe.
